Mammal Group Surveys

Why are we trying to record mammals?

Surprisingly mammals are not the easiest of species to record; many are small, secretive and nocturnal. Even those that we consider ‘common’ may not be so. Water voles were once regularly seen, but in the last 15 years have suffered a dramatic population decline. Only by recording mammals can we begin to identify potential population anomalies.

TheHMG is seeking to obtain sufficient mammal records to enable the group to construct a County Mammal Atlas, using a simple methodology. This work will then continue so that records can be assimilated for future local or national mammal assessment.

Please use our survey form which you can download as a PDF file below. The form is designed to be used as an A5 booklet and can also be downloaded as a Word Document The instructions for use are on the form.

For Nature Reserves and Bird Reserves.....

the form is also available as an A4 sheet with a separate A4 intructions sheet

This is intended to be used in a fixed location, such as a storage hut or a bird hide on a nature reserve. Consequently as the location is fixed for each record it does not ask for a grid reference but as recorders may vary it does have a space for different names.
If you are small mammal trapping using Longworths or similar, Recording sheets are availble either as a PDF file or a
Word Document.

Don't forget to inform the County Mammal Recorder of any records you obtain

Societas Europaea Mammalogica

The SEM was founded in 1988 at a meeting in Paris to discuss the preparation of a European Mammals Atlas. The purposes of the Society are:

* To promote links between European mammalogists
* To encourage the study and conservation of European mammals
* To carry out projects on European mammals
